Not all 5Ks are equal. A hilly Parkrun course can add 2-4 minutes compared to a flat one. If you want a PB, choose a flat course. Courses like Bushy Park (the original), Colwick, and Pontypool are known for being fast. Check course reviews on parkrun.org.uk before choosing your target race.
The single biggest predictor of Parkrun improvement is consistency between Parkruns. Runners who train 3 days per week see measurable improvement every 4-6 weeks. Runners who only run on Saturdays plateau quickly.
Most runners train too hard on easy days and not hard enough on hard days. The 80/20 rule — 80% easy, 20% hard — is the evidence-based approach used by elite coaches. Running your easy runs genuinely easily builds the aerobic base that makes race pace sustainable.
Parkrun calculates an "age grade" percentage that compares your time to the world record for your age and gender. A 60-year-old running 31:00 may have a higher age grade than a 25-year-old running 24:00. Age grade is the more meaningful measure of performance as you get older.
The fastest route to a Parkrun PB is structured training between Saturdays. A simple 3-day week of: one easy run, one tempo or interval session, and one Parkrun gives most runners a 1-3 minute improvement in 4-8 weeks.

Use the Race Time Predictor →For a beginner, finishing is a good time. The average UK Parkrun time is 28:46, but that includes runners who have been doing it for years. For a first-timer, anything under 40 minutes is a perfectly respectable result. Focus on completing it comfortably before chasing a time.
Yes. Sub-30 minutes puts you faster than the average female UK Parkrunner and around the average for male runners. It is a milestone worth celebrating and a meaningful target for recreational runners to work towards.
Very good. Sub-25 minutes puts you in approximately the top 20% of all UK Parkrun finishers. It requires consistent training and a decent aerobic base. For most recreational runners, it is an aspirational but achievable target with 3-4 months of structured training.
With structured training (3 runs per week), most beginners see 1-2 minute improvement in their first 4 weeks and continued improvement for 3-6 months as aerobic fitness builds. Progress then slows and requires more specific training (intervals, tempo runs) to continue improving.
Age grade is a percentage that compares your finish time to the world record for your age group and gender. A score of 60%+ is considered solid, 70%+ is good, 80%+ is excellent, and 90%+ is world-class. Age grade allows fair comparison between runners of different ages.
